Data Engineer Interview Experience - New York, New York

Process

The interview process involved:

  • A recruiting call
  • A first technical interview
  • A take-home assignment
  • A second technical interview
  • An interview with the CTO

The take-home assignment, which involved building the app they were hiring for, was very open-ended and was supposed to take three hours. However, the assignment instructions asked for quite a bit and wanted me to work on their business datasets and use my own cloud resources. This was a red flag, but it was my fault for ignoring it.

I had a second technical interview to review the code and get questioned further. It went well. I was told I did a great job on the assignment and that they would like to proceed with an interview with the CTO.

A few days later, I received an email telling me they were declining my application because my take-home assignment wasn't suitable for large-scale systems. I mean, that's understandable for a three-hour take-home assignment, right? I'm a bit baffled and feel like this company is exploitative during its interview process.

I read a few reviews comparing Hugging Face to Theranos (i.e., no direction and no real product). I'll consider this a bullet dodged.
