Pros

The company develops some of the most advanced technologies.

As an engineer at IBM, you get to work with a great deal of experts in their fields.

Technical vitality is cultivated and encouraged.

Cons

The working environment tends to be political.

Many people tend to rely too much on their "mentors". A hard-working engineer who does not have a mentor has a good chance of being passed over for career advancement.

Advice to Management

It would be very motivating to the hard-working, self-reliant engineers if the "mentor" system was discontinued. An engineer needs to feel that they can advance solely on the merits of their talent and contributions, rather than having to need a mentor.
