When I joined IBM, it was in the midst of designing, manufacturing, shipping, and supporting the System 360 line of computers. The S/360 catapulted IBM to the Fortune 500. Innovation in technology was the driving force that set IBM ahead of its competitors until the late 1980s.
In the late 80's, IBM abandoned its technology roots. It started buying other companies' technology, putting it in a "Blue Box" with an IBM logo and marking it up 40%. IBM sold off the DISK file business to Hatatci and cut way back on developing advanced technologies in favor of growing its SERVICE functions.
IBM now has no competitive advantage. EDS and many other companies are good at SERVICE. IBM has outsourced much of its workforce to India and Japan. The health plan is but a shadow of the great plan offered in the 1970's.
Rebuild the Engineering team and regain technology leadership in Computers, Storage Systems, and Printers.
