I have had many (25) good years with IBM. I've worked with really good people, invested in their jobs and the success of their projects. There is opportunity at IBM to move around and have many different experiences. I've worked on over half a dozen projects in those years and in a variety of capacities. Decent benefits including flex time and sick leave. Every direct manager I've had cared about his/her employees and gave flexibility when 'real life' issues arose.
This isn't the old IBM. Now, like any other company, to hang on and avoid layoffs, you need to acquire and maintain relevant skills and are responsible for your own future. You also need a certain amount of luck to not be on the wrong project at the wrong time. It strives to be 'middle of the road' compensation-wise.
Hopefully, we will continue to hire high-quality people.
The process is very simple and basic. It involves one technical and one HR round. Mostly, questions are based on your experience and skills. Domain knowledge is most important. Additional skills are welcome for the position.
I applied online and communicated with recruiters at the Emeryville, CA office. They gave me a prescreening problem to solve. I submitted my solution, and then nothing. They seemed interested, but I guess not. Ghosting is not nice.
The first round was a technical round and it was very interactive. The second round was a 1:1 round, and it was all about salary discussion. Finally, HR called me and said they were releasing the offer letter. Overall, the experience was good.
