Pros

In prior decades, there were great engineers and developers with whom to work. The 8% 401k match and funds within were top-notch compared to other tech companies. Innovators were rewarded in the patent program. There was talk that better bonuses would happen as the business met its overall EPS roadmap.

Cons

The business model no longer seems to support experienced talent. When your "Total Compensation Package" nears $130-$150k USD, management appears to view those with advanced skills in software and engineering as a place to cost-cut (AKA, layoff). IBM lobbies Congress for more H1-B workers because they "cannot find skilled workers" – workers they know already had worked for them, yet fail to rehire after layoffs.

Also, reportedly, the pros mentioned above don't exist anymore. Businesses nearly always found an excuse to not pay bonuses and raises on par with other tech companies.

Advice to Management

Hire skilled & trainable US citizens back instead of complaining to DC that you cannot find the talent.

This means Sr. Management needs to fund positions appropriately instead of mainly seeking the near college grad crowd.
