Software Development Manager Interview Experience

Process

I had a first-level coding interview with a developer. It went well, and I was invited for a second interview with the PM.

During the interview, one of the questions was, "How can we make it easier for employers to find candidates?"

I replied, "If 100 candidates apply for a position, we will automatically give a score for each resume based on how relevant the resume is to the job description."

The interviewer did not like the answer and said that it was unfair to some candidates. I don't understand why that is unfair.

When I apply through Indeed, it gives jobs in some order. From what I can tell, it lists those that are similar to my resume at the top. To rank them like this, they should have an internal score of how my resume and the job match.

If my proposed scoring is unfair, then is it not unfair to order jobs based on relevance?

I can say for sure that it feels unfair to me to be denied based on this answer.
