Process

The interview process was multi-faceted.

Scheduling: Took too long. From discussing scheduling to the actual interview date, it took approximately two months, which is way above average. In comparison, both smaller companies (e.g., start-ups) and larger ones (like Amazon, Google, Facebook) took one to two weeks, tops, to schedule virtual on-sites.

Interview Day: Was one of the longest days I've had. There were eight interviews (Google and Facebook have five interviews, in comparison), with non-existent breaks between them (unlike an average of five to ten minutes, with Google leading with mandatory fifteen-minute breaks between interviews).

The interview included coding questions, a design question, behavioral questions, guided discussions of solving coding problems, and sample code reviewing on GitHub.

Overall, the experience was nice, and Indeed provides plenty of feedback, which is great.

Downsides:

  • Under-leveling happened (big time), despite being pressed two years ago to apply at higher levels.
  • Interviewers seemed to be looking for very specific things that they had in mind, and it was unclear what those were. They often judged subjects very subjectively, compared to the data-driven approach of other employers.
  • Resume "deep-dives" were very subjective. Managers either liked you or didn't. They asked probing questions that you often couldn't answer without violating confidentiality agreements with prior employers. There was too much emphasis on "show me what you've done," which works for some candidates but not all, as opposed to "show me your skills, thought process, and potential."

I respect their process, but it's not for everyone.

Unlike other companies, I recommend candidates be upfront about salary expectations. While Indeed gives employees more time off than its competitors, benefits are otherwise average, and financial compensation is on the lower end.

Friends who work there say great things about the company, so I would not dismiss it. However, it really depends on what you want from your career.

Questions

Cannot share specific questions due to NDA. These are very typical questions for software companies, except for the behavioral and resume deep-dives, which tend to be rather subjective.
