Software Engineer Interview Experience - New York, New York

Process

One of the weirdest and worst hiring/onboarding processes I've ever experienced.

First, there was the typical phone screen. The follow-up to that was a two-hour "interview day" even where they brought a bunch of people in, asking one hour of behavioral questions and one hour of technical questions.

Following that, they decided they were going to give me an offer, which was weird because for most companies, that's not enough, but also I did not know enough about them. The follow-up was a thirty-minute "placement call," which was saying, "Here, you got this job; this is the team you're going to be working on."

Odd, but okay, but what followed was why I recommend no one work here.

I received an email saying I had to submit an application to a job first before I got the offer, which is very odd since I already applied to a position. Why couldn't they internally move me over? Fine, sure. After that, they started the background check process, which was handled by a separate division within JPM.

This process took five WEEKS, delaying my potential employment by five weeks because of a MASSIVE disconnect between the two divisions. They would send me an email requesting information; I'd reply with what I had, what I could provide, what I couldn't, and ask for substitutions. I received almost robot responses days later on each occasion, often either misleading or showing that they didn't read anything I wrote. I finally called them to try and sort things out; they basically told me my email reply with a lot of information was not enough and to send a new one.

Shortly after that, I received an urgent text from my would-be manager saying, "They have been constantly trying to reach out to you and gotten no response. If you wish to work here, you have to respond."

To which I replied with images of my two emails in response to the background check division that had received no replies from them. They said, "I'll look into this."

Radio silence for another week, employment date delayed another week. More demands from the background check department to the point where I said, "F this, I'm going to find a new job."

After two weeks from that date, five weeks from when I accepted the offer, they FINALLY cleared the background check and sent me instructions on remote onboarding.

I replied to them and told my would-be manager: I accepted another role, consider my employment terminated, and filed what I could using their online portal.

For the next two weeks, I received emails regarding how and when to attend my virtual onboarding for a position I pulled out of.

Extremely unprofessional.

Questions

A pretty entry-level question that involved solving a BFS/DFS for the second part.
