Pros
  • Pivotal Cloud is helping build a basic set of cloud tools.
  • Some teams get to do challenging work.
Cons

Almost every team in the asset wealth management division is struggling with the maintenance of Sybase and other legacy technologies. There is no clear timeline to transition away from them. Pivotal cloud applications serve as a thin skin over the underlying monstrosities.

Engineers who have been working with such legacy systems for a long time have become jaded. They don't provide much help to new employees to keep their positions secure.

There is no correlation between pay rate as a contractor and full-time salary. Contract-to-hire positions seem to be used as bait-and-switch.

HR doesn't seem to be doing any market analysis of developer salaries.

Full-time employees get health benefits only after one month of employment.

Health insurance premiums are charged for every kid in the family (this might be due to regulations, but I haven't seen it at any other company in my career).

Lots of tech managers are still in New York/New Jersey. They are refusing to move to Plano.

Working with offshore teams in India is tough due to the time difference.

Advice to Management
  • Provide clear timelines to move away from Sybase and other legacy tech.
  • Ensure that salary is comparable to other banks in the area.
  • Help more managers to move to the Plano office.
