Data Engineer Interview Experience - San Jose, California

Process

The interview process was good. The recruiter responded well to reschedule requests, and the interviewer provided helpful hints. The interviewer's goal was to help me succeed rather than to see me fail. I was given four SQL and two Python questions. Although I had prepared well and am generally good at coding, I felt pressure during the interview. I took time to consider some edge cases during the programming portion. Be prepared to code quickly, understand hints from the interviewer faster, and apply them.

Questions

Python Questions:

Average length of words. Some edge cases to consider include spaces at the beginning and end of words, returning a float instead of an integer, and returning None for blank input.

Valid IP address. An edge case to remember is the presence of alphanumeric characters.

SQL Questions:

One SQL question was tricky because you had to look at the data to formulate the question. The question was to find the percentage of valid promotions. The condition for a valid promotion was not specified, so you had to figure it out by examining the data.

Other SQL questions were based on joins, group by, and top (3).
