Process

I filed a request on the FB careers page. I had one prescreening with someone from HR and three technical interviews over the phone.

My first interview was about programming. It took about 45 minutes. The questions were fairly simple; they just wanted to make sure I was a programmer.

The second interview was about system administration. I would say it was really tough. It started with some tricky questions and ended with tough questions. Even though there were some hard questions, they weren't something out of the blue.

The third interview was mostly about networking. Again, there was nothing unanticipated.

By that time, they asked me to fly to Menlo Park for onsite interviews. They paid for all my expenses, and SF is a beautiful city!

My interview started at 12 PM. I had five interviews onsite.

The first interview was mostly about systems and networking. They asked me to explain in as much detail as possible what happens when you run "telnet facebook.com 80" in bash. I broke down all the steps and talked for about 45 minutes.

We went for lunch.

The second interview was about system administration. The interviewer asked me lots of questions that I don't recall. The only unexpected question was what I would do if I had 1000 new servers and wanted to make them functional. I gave him some ideas.

The third interview was about programming. Again, they just wanted to make sure I knew how to program.

For the fourth interview, I met with someone from another IT group. His main questions were about how I communicate with other groups and how I would solve problems when people from other groups were involved.

The fifth interviewer, I suppose he was a manager of FB's SRE team. He asked me some things that I don't remember exactly, but he wanted to know about my attitudes and that kind of stuff.

FYI, if you are worried about the interviews, you can freely ask HR about them. They usually tell you what the interview is about, and you can prepare for it.
