Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience - New York, New York

Process

Facebook emailed me often, asking me to interview for a position there. I finally agreed after I was ready to leave my current job.

My initial call was with a recruiter who provided only generic information. She then scheduled a technical interview for me, and I spent two weeks preparing.

I conducted the interview on CoderPad via their video service. The interviewer's grasp of English was not strong, making it difficult for me to follow their questions. They asked me to implement a simple algorithm. When I tried to ask clarifying questions about the expectations for the work, the interviewer often struggled to explain what they were asking, sometimes becoming flustered and having to retract or rephrase their instructions.

Once I understood the conditions and edge cases, I began writing the algorithm. There was no expectation for it to run, so I walked the interviewer through my logic. They offered little feedback, but did change the input and asked how that would affect the output, which I again explained.

Following that, they asked for the Big O notation of the algorithm, and I provided my answer, which I believe was correct.

Nothing was said afterwards. I'm accustomed to interviewers asking how I might have improved the algorithm. The interviewer left me about three minutes for my own questions, and that concluded the session.

Overall, it was not a positive experience. These interviews seem geared towards recent college graduates rather than testing the abilities of someone with over 15 years of experience, like myself.

I emailed the recruiter afterwards to inquire about next steps, and she stated she would get back to me the following week. On Monday, I received a generic rejection email. Surprised, I emailed again asking for feedback, but received no response.

I sent my solution to five friends who are senior/principal engineers, and all of them indicated they had no understanding of why I was rejected.

I have previously interviewed and worked at other prestigious tech organizations and have never had an experience like this. I am unsure what kind of candidate this process is designed to attract, but I certainly would not consider interviewing for a role there again.
