Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience

Process

A recruiter contacted me and scheduled a phone interview. I couldn't practice resolving problems beforehand and bought a headset – a pretty bad one, not good. I could barely hear my interviewer, and I told him. I'm not sure if he listened. The first problem was OK, but the second one took several minutes to understand. I couldn't see a connection between two nodes of the data sample, and we ran out of time before I could start.

After the call, it took me about 5 minutes to resolve the second problem. I sent the solution to the recruiter.

I think that maybe if a manager had seen my two solutions, they would have offered me an online chance. But God knows why things happen or don't.

Questions

  1. Add data between low and max values from a BST.

  2. Determine if the nodes of a graph can be separated into 2 alternate colors.

    i.e. a->b->c yes: white-black-white

    a->b->c; a->c no: 'c' cannot be white and black. I could not see the connection between a->c, so I could not understand why the second example was false; both looked the same to me.
