Software Engineer Interview Experience - London, United Kingdom

Process

Initial call with the recruiter to briefly discuss my experience and aspirations.

Followed up with a one-hour virtual interview with an engineer. He introduced himself, after which I spoke about my experience very briefly (5 minutes). We then spent 35 minutes coding, with the rest of the time left for me to ask questions.

Overall, I feel like this interview format doesn’t really allow senior engineers to promote themselves and showcase their achievements.

Who cares if you delivered a system from scratch serving thousands of users daily or built a team from nothing? They want to see if you can sort 'n' characters in reverse using a linked list with an eye on recursion, while someone stands over your shoulder.

For a graduate straight out of university who doesn’t have any commercial experience, I think the process is fine. How else would you evaluate them?

But when I asked about CI/CD and GitOps methodologies at Facebook (techniques a more senior engineer can appreciate), the interviewer had no/little idea. So, I guess you tell me: who would you hire?
