Software Engineer Interview Experience - Menlo Park, California

Process

I was contacted by a recruiter who found me via graph search and was asked whether I was job hunting. I chose to go onsite for the initial phone screen. The question was straightforward, with an emphasis on fast and accurate coding, and the interviewer was very knowledgeable.

A few days after the screen, the recruiter scheduled an on-site interview. The dates were quite flexible. The on-site consisted of four interviews: three pure coding interviews (one of which was about design) and one research interview (I guess this is for all PhD applicants).

I was quite happy with the coding interviews, but the research one was, well, a little annoying since the interviewer seemed dismissive of everything. Overall, it was a nice experience: two interviews, lunch, a tour, and then two more interviews in the afternoon, and it was done!

I did wait for three weeks for a decision. During that period, HR seemed a little unresponsive. When I followed up, I received a one-line email saying, "We are reviewing your case and will come back to you soon." This was a little annoying, especially as the feeling of being silently rejected started to grow, but I guess it's not HR's fault.

In the end, I was offered a job with flexible titles: Software Engineer, Research Scientist, or whatever. I decided not to take the offer, but the interview process was very smooth.

Questions

I've signed an NDA, so it might not be appropriate to disclose the questions. They were standard coding questions, not the difficult ones found on LeetCode, but you need to ensure you don't make silly mistakes. Missing a few semicolons is acceptable, though.
