Process

I applied to Facebook through their website and received a call from the recruiter the next day. They asked standard screening questions and scheduled a technical phone screen for later that week.

The phone screen was conducted using coderpad.io. They immediately presented a challenge by setting up a C++ environment, despite my having informed the recruiter that I was most comfortable in Python and never having claimed any familiarity with C++. However, interview questions are generally broad enough that, as long as you are not completely unfamiliar with the language's syntax, you can typically perform adequately in any language. So, we proceeded in C++.

The interviewer was very pleasant and even offered some tips for improving my resume at the outset. Then we began coding. They had chosen a great question to assess my programming ability. Unfortunately, I faltered by making too many assumptions about the question and not carefully considering what lay behind the interface the interviewer had provided.

This all occurred about two or three weeks ago, and I am certain I will not be progressing to the next step. The sole negative aspect of this experience is that the recruiter has not followed up with me at all. Rejection is not uncommon when applying to a company like Facebook, but that does not negate the company's responsibility to have the courtesy to at least inform applicants of the decision.

Overall, the experience was great in the beginning, but I was disappointed by the perceived lack of respect for the process from the recruiter.

Questions

Given a buffer-like interface from which you can only read data in chunks of a fixed size, implement a reader that can read as many bytes as it wants from this interface.
