I had a technical phone interview where I was forced to turn on my camera, even though Facebook explicitly sent an email stating that the first interview would not require a camera. The interviewer insisted I turn on my camera and became aggressive and sexist when he discovered I was not from the same country as him (India). He asked two simple coding questions. I explained them very clearly, and even though Facebook doesn't allow us to run the code, I had to manually validate the code for him to understand. However, he still didn't understand and kept yelling at me to explain. Finally, when he understood the first code, we moved on to the second one, where I had less than 10 minutes to write and explain the code. I finished that as well.
I suspect he had trouble understanding Python. I don't know why he pretended not to understand. However, I know that if I were from the same country as him, or if I wasn't a girl, he wouldn't have been so tough on me. I informed the recruiter, who didn't seem to care about how the interviewer treated me.
I know Facebook Engineering only hires VISA holders and targets one region of the world. However, this is unfair to the rest of us who pass the tests but are treated poorly because the interviewer can treat you however they please and get away with it.
Please record your interviews in case you are in a similar situation. Please record.
