Software Engineering New Grad Interview Experience

Process

There's not much to say about my interview process that hasn't already been said. I was referred by an employee and they responded pretty promptly to my application.

There were two rounds of phone interviews, spaced a couple of weeks apart, followed by a full day of on-site interviews. Facebook is becoming a large company, and this is apparent in some of their turnaround times. There used to be complete radio silence for a week or so before news came in sporadically.

I believe I did pretty well in the coding and other sections. The one area where I knew I was weak, and which the interview process corroborated, was system design. There aren't many resources to help prepare for this, and it cannot be built up through preparation alone; one needs extensive experience in software projects, or ideally, experience as an engineer, to answer these questions well. I was invited for a follow-up phone design interview after the on-site and was ultimately rejected.

I don't have much more to add. The coding questions are very standard and likely easier than they were previously, reflecting the company's growth. The engineers I spoke with seemed happy at Facebook. However, the hacker culture, the quick-and-dirty approach, and the general focus on pushing to production turned me off slightly. I was aware of this culture beforehand, but experiencing it directly left a bad taste in my mouth. Or perhaps the grapes are sour.

Questions

I signed an NDA, so I cannot reveal explicit questions.

Practice standard algorithms and data structures. Nothing too fancy.

Remember how containers in the standard library are implemented.

Oh, and practice system design questions, if you know how.
