I was scheduled to interview with Microsoft. Two days prior, I received an offer from another company that I really liked. Therefore, I contacted the HR personnel at Microsoft to inform them that I had accepted an offer elsewhere and needed to cancel the interview.
I received a strongly worded email back from the HR representative (a blue badge) stating that I was squandering an opportunity to work on something to "take Google down." The message also warned that I was "burning my bridges in this town" and should reconsider if I ever wanted to pursue machine learning work locally again.
Seriously! This message came directly from Microsoft HR, not a contractor. This was a complete failure on their part. As if Microsoft's image wasn't already challenging enough, they are now threatening potential candidates for accepting offers from different companies. It's quite concerning.
From my perspective as an engineer who has conducted many interviews, I would appreciate this kind of candid honesty. I would not want to waste my time interviewing someone who wasn't genuinely interested in the position and was only attending the interview because it was scheduled.
