Entry Level Software Engineer Interview Experience - Provo, Utah

Process

A recruiter contacted me on LinkedIn and encouraged me to apply for one of their positions. Once I did, they asked me to schedule a phone interview.

I spoke with the recruiter over the phone, and frankly, I felt like he made his decision before even giving me the chance to talk about what I want to do in my career. I explained that at my current job, I am doing 70% testing and 30% [unspecified activity]. Even though I really enjoy testing, I am very willing and open to software engineering.

I felt like he based his decision on that, and in my opinion, that is unfair. He sent me an online assessment, which I did super well on, but unfortunately, they decided to go with another applicant.

In their email, they encouraged me to reach out to my recruiter with any questions I might have. Because I knew I did well on their assessment, I wanted to understand where my application was lacking so that I could improve for future opportunities. This is why I sent an email thanking him for his time and the opportunity to interview, and to ask him where my application was lacking.

It’s been almost two weeks now, and I still haven’t received a response. I believe that the courtesy to respond to an email I was encouraged to send in the first place should be there. I felt like because I wasn’t offered the job, they also implied that I wasn’t deserving of a response to my email.

This is why I am giving the interview a thumbs down! Everything else went great.
