Microsoft Work Experiences

Lots of resources, though not the most collaborative environment

Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) • Former Employee

Pros: Fair amount of bright people. Updated on some company events. Friendly place to work. Company events are great to boost morale. You get your own space (for those who like it). Lots of products and services to work on. Good as an entry place, although I don't have enough experience with senior-level experience. Stable company!

Cons: People are generally friendly but might not go out of their way to get to know you. It doesn't have the entrepreneurial feel in some groups. Some groups are not as tightly knit with each other, so you don't have the team feel. You don't necessarily get the sense of contribution to the overall product when the team isn't one of the best products.

Pros: You get to work with some of the smartest people around. You get to play with some of the latest technologies. You get to work in some really good environments. You get your own office. You're working on products with long-term strategies.

Cons: I have to deal with a lot of politics where often times the person doing the hard work doesn't get the credit he or she deserves. You're in a massive company, with labyrinthine org charts. Sometimes a very cool idea gets shot down by legal. These ideas may not be shot down in other companies, but since Microsoft has been burned badly by the antitrust case, they're extra careful.
