Process

The hiring manager contacted me based on a referral.

Instead of a phone interview, the hiring manager scheduled a one-on-one in-person interview. The interview questions were:

  1. Tell me something about yourself.
  2. Tell me about your previous experiences and your role.
  3. Why a full-time position at Microsoft?
  4. Why testing and not development?
  5. Test a vending machine localized for Americans.
  6. How would you design the testing of a vending machine? What sequence of tests would you perform? For example, structure the testing process by considering snack bars, buttons, coins, dispensers, power control, motors, etc.
  7. How would you approach automation? Which tests would you automate and which would you perform manually?
  8. This is a coding question: Given two strings, write a program to determine if they are anagrams. For example, if "abc" and "bca" are the two strings, the program should return true because both strings have the same length and all characters match. The count of each character should also be the same.
  9. Test the above code with different types of tests.
  10. The interviewer suggested I ask any questions about their team.

Later, I received a call from the recruiter saying they were interested in conducting full-loop interviews. Here are the interview details:

  1. Implement maze functionality (the mouse should move and eat cheese) with the following functions: • Step: Moves the mouse one step ahead. • Rotate: Rotates the mouse 90 degrees. • IsDotWall: Returns true or false if a wall is present. • Is.Cheese: This needs to be called when cheese is detected. It will exit the program.

  2. Test the GoTo dialog box in one of Microsoft's internal applications.

  3. The developer provided a small function: csharp public static double FunctionName(string str) { // code return someDoubleValue; }

    Test the above function thinking of it as black-box testing.

  4. There was a previous version of the toaster. They are going to ship a new toaster to the market. Test it.
