A Microsoft recruiter came to UW for an on-campus interview. I received an email informing me that I had passed the first interview and would be scheduled for the final interview.
Later, I received another email asking if I would like to switch to interviewing for an SDET position. I preferred to wait for the SDE role, so I waited for another 1.5 months for the final interview.

Pros: A very challenging work environment that forces you to be actively involved in all phases of the software lifecycle. It is an ideal place to grow across all facets of a software engineer.
Cons: The very aggressive schedules make for a very difficult work/life balance. Management makes it a point to express a good balance, but when it comes down to it, deadlines are deadlines, and management will throw caution to the wind to ensure the product hits RTM (Release to Market) on time.

Pros: - Great benefits
- Get your own office
- Good salary
- Cafeteria
- Yearly bonus + stock award
- Get to see some cool stuff
Cons: - Some people, especially middle management, are not qualified for their jobs and should not be in this industry, let alone working at Microsoft.
- Innovative ideas are not encouraged.
- Stupid metric system for evaluations. This system makes no sense from an engineering point of view.
- Managers can screw you over in evaluations, and there is nothing you can do about it.
- Poor work-life balance, but I blame this on the poor quality of the managers.

Pros: Some genuinely interesting technology, and most ICs I work with want to make the best product they can. Great benefits package, pay is average.
Cons: Management (in general) can make for some truly caustic work environments, sucking all the joy and morale out of groups. I've seen some talented people in management who strive to improve their groups, but they are the exception, not the rule. Yeah, this sounds cliché, but areas of MS can make Dilbert look prophetic.
