Process

I interviewed for SWE internship role. There were two technical 1:1 rounds in which the interviewer asked about different data structures & algorithms and system design questions. I answered most of them. Questions were quite vague, and you have to clarify your doubts with the interviewer and tell your solution process at each step.

Microsoft Work Experiences

Great Culture, Variable Teams

Software Engineering • Former Employee

Redmond, Washington, United States

Pros: Good corporate culture. Good compensation. Good perks. A 9-5 job. It might not be as fancy as other tech companies right now, but there are no crazy hours or expectation to stay long hours. The culture is relatively open as well.

Cons: Typical big company problems. Difficult transparency to higher levels. Some decisions don't make sense to lower-level employees. Experience can vary extremely between teams – hugely! I cannot emphasize this enough. One team may have a very strict, no-nonsense culture; another might be completely different.

Intern at Garage

Software Engineering • Former Employee

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Pros: It was an awesome experience. You get full ownership of a project, which is amazing to have as an intern. A lot of the projects received a lot of attention throughout Microsoft. The management is really good; everyone is willing to help.

Cons: At the Garage, you won't be given full exposure as to what it's like to be a Software Engineer at Microsoft, because it's an experience of its own. With that said, you'll learn some valuable skills and gain amazing experience, and you can be given another internship or full-time interview. The pay in the States is way better, but management is working on it.

Excited to be an intern

Software Engineering • Current Employee

Pros: Great place to intern. They throw a company party for interns and hire about 70% of interns for full-time positions, which is promising.

Cons: Not sure yet, since I am due to start in summer 2016. I will write an updated review when I have more info.
