Pros
  1. There are some very smart people you want to be around.
  2. Sometimes you get to work on interesting things.
Cons
  1. Stack-ranking is a disaster: a pseudo-science at work affecting many.

  2. A lot of people approach their jobs similarly to politicians with one goal in mind: higher position, more money, more visibility. It is more important for others to be known, as opposed to whether they actually accomplished something.

  3. Wisdom flows down from above; for example, bet the company on cloud.

Advice to Management

Abandon stack-ranking. This is the single-biggest threat to the company.

Focus on building teams that are happy to work together and show results to actual customers.
