Politics above work

Pros
  • You can get paid a lot to do nothing.
  • Nice facilities (some newer ones) and lots of amenities.
  • Decent engineers are hired. Good ones leave within a few years, though.
Cons
  • Politics pay more, so if you learn bullying tactics and how to steal credit while shifting all blame, you are better off than getting anything done.

  • Old/dated technology/tools: I have worked in 7 different positions there, ranging from dev to test, and realized in 5 years I was falling behind my development peers and had to leave, despite ignoring politics and trying to do development.

  • Middle management that insists on making decisions despite not knowing how work is done (they were busy playing politics).

Advice to Management

Empower engineers. Flip the org chart on its head and serve your engineers, helping them get stuff done. They do the stuff you get paid for.
