Pros
  • Great intern benefits: free food in SF office, healthcare (even for interns), fully paid corporate housing, competitive salary, and transportation and relocation support.
  • Lots of support from the team: your manager and 1-2 mentors will look out for you, along with others on your project.
  • Often, interns are put on a real feature that ships over the summer.
  • It is reasonable to receive a return offer if you are honestly doing work and looking to create impact.
  • Work-life balance is built into the culture here and isn't something you have to assert. My team comes in between 9-10 AM and leaves at 5:30 PM at the absolute latest.
  • Satya (the CEO) is seriously a game-changer for Microsoft. Honestly, go read an interview with him; he's the coolest. I really think he is going to continue to do big things with the company.
Cons

If you aren't in the Redmond office, you miss out on a lot of events. They do plan a few San Francisco events, as well as fly you out for a week to Redmond for their Signature Event.

Advice to Management

Continue putting interns on real projects! Being able to interact with other roles within the company and with other employees besides my immediate teammates has allowed me a much broader perspective.
