Pros
  • Work-life balance
  • Impact on products that are used by millions
  • Pretty competitive compensation, could always be better
  • After years on the market, Microsoft is still on top of things (consider OpenAI investment, as an example), always growing its reach and profits
  • Overall, a good company with values that might fit you
Cons
  • Not for ambitious people; slow growth.
  • Everything is slow in general, which might be a pro or con; just something to be aware of. Lots of bureaucracy.
  • Poor QA.
  • A lot of people have been working there since graduation. As a result, there is a very specific internal environment and thinking, and a lack of knowledge of modern technologies, patterns, and processes used outside of the company.
  • Some people don't practice the values that I mentioned in the pros. Very passive, they don't want to grow themselves or support others.
Advice to Management
  • Diversify with professionals with solid experience from outside of Microsoft.
  • Cut meetings, invest more in async communication and professional growth.
  • Encourage people to be mentors or at least support their teammates.
  • Make ownership a part of the job for accountability.
