Software Developer C# Interview Experience - Canada

Process

The interview process began with an hour-long phone interview, followed by a 3.5-hour on-site interview. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the on-site interview was subsequently changed to a Skype interview.

It was a horrible experience. One of the interviewers repeatedly asked unclear questions. He asked about my previous position, and before I could explain, he interrupted me, stating he didn't want a simple description of my duties. He insisted on hearing about inheritance and how I designed my solutions, requesting implementation details regarding user notifications. I explained that the system was already in place, and I only needed to call a library. He then proceeded to ask a lengthy and equally unclear question, which essentially boiled down to, "How would you have designed it?"

If you are conducting a Skype interview and your microphone is of poor quality, please be concise with your questions.

The same interviewer then instructed me to open Notepad and write a console application to determine if a number is prime. He asked me to consider it an actual library and to keep it professional, yet he provided no specific requirements. Since it was in Notepad, I assumed syntax wouldn't be critical and wrote out the code, explaining my thought process. However, it turned out his sole concern was syntax, and he directed me to a slow online compiler to get my code working.

Once that interview concluded, another interviewer joined and asked me to write a different program. I inquired if I could use Notepad and if syntax mattered. Before the new interviewer could respond, the same previous interviewer remained on the line and cut him off, telling me to stick with the compiler.

If syntax and compilation are more important to you than logic, please inform your HR department to have interviewees install Visual Studio. Alternatively, do not enforce the use of laptops with webcams, so I can utilize my other computer, which has Visual Studio installed.
