Hardware Engineer Interview Experience - Santa Clara, California

Process

Strange experience:

  • Applied for a researcher position through my university career center.
  • A recruiter emailed me, stating I was approved by the VP as a qualified candidate (I had no idea what that meant) and distributed my resume to interested hiring managers.
  • One hiring manager contacted me for a phone interview regarding a hardware engineer position.
  • The phone interview was short and easy. I was then invited for an onsite interview.
  • In the meantime, the recruiter initiated a background check for me (I had no idea why he initiated one so early).
  • The on-site interview was easy. I had several one-on-one interviews with the hiring manager and other engineers on his team. They also gave me a lab and campus tour.
  • After about a month, I was invited for a second on-site interview with higher management and other senior engineers.
  • The hiring manager promised to make a decision within a week. However, after a month, he still didn't have an answer for me.
  • The process took a long time. During the wait, I followed up with the hiring manager several times. He kept expressing his interest in me but couldn't give me an offer due to some internal issues that I don't really understand. I was left hanging for a long time, and they still haven't made a decision. I don't want to wait anymore and will treat it as a rejection and move on.
  • I still have not received the refund for my travel expenses.
