I was contacted by a recruiter after submitting my resume at a conference.
The first round was a phone interview where the recruiter discussed the position and asked some short technical questions. There was no coding involved; it was a discussion of general approaches to problems.
One question was: "Your favorite webpage gives you a 404 when you load it. How would you troubleshoot this?"
After I answered, my interviewer stated that the "obvious missed step" was checking my own internet connection. I am unsure whether this was a test or an oversight on the interviewer's part, but it is incorrect. If my connection wasn't working, I would not receive a 404 error; instead, I would be unable to get any response from the server at all, as my requests would fail entirely.
The interviewer was overtly disinterested for the remainder of the interview after that point, and I did not receive another interview.
