Software Engineer Interview Experience - Lutherville Timonium, Maryland

Process

This was the most awful interview experience I have ever had. The interviewers were extremely disrespectful to me. It was really obvious that it was intentional. All three interviewers were Indian, and I am Indian as well. So, they actually thought they could behave in whatever manner they wanted. I gave this interview in December 2020, and no one ever asked me for feedback.

I am obligated to give the names of my interviewers because they were so bad. (Glassdoor does not allow people's names to be used).

The interview was a two-hour panel interview. Some questions were on my resume, a coding problem, and the last were questions on design.

All three were extremely disrespectful. One of the staff engineers was shouting the entire time during the interview. I felt like I was suspected of a crime and brought into custody for questioning.

The coding question was wrongly presented to me. When I asked for clarification, they said, "Yes, time can start at a higher number and end at a lower number." This meant the problem was different.

When they saw the problem statement was wrong, they flipped and said, "Numbers are not time; they are just numbers. The function needs to return if the given range fits in the problems."

They were unable to follow anything I was talking through. They had no interest and were unable to understand the approach I explained. Once I had the code ready, they just wanted me to run the code against provided input (yes, the code share was a compiler, not a plain text editor).

They obviously did not have the ability to tell whether the code would work or not without actually running it.

Some of the design questions Niraj Giri asked were actually projects he was working on. When I raised an objection, he started shouting and began insulting and belittling me.

Please do not even plan to interview in this place. This is a really toxic place.

If you are giving an interview, my recommendation is to plan to record it. Avoid signing an NDA. If you have a similar experience, please make the recording public. I would have definitely done it if I knew I was going to have such a bad experience.

I would also recommend not allowing them to use a tool where you can compile code. Ask them to use a plain text editor and have them determine if the code can run or not.

A couple of weeks after giving this interview, I interviewed with Google and Rivian and cleared with flying colors. I joined Rivian as a Senior Software Engineer. You can tell by the way a tech interview is conducted what type of person the other person is. I am really happy with my decision to join Rivian.
