Pros
  • Good learning curve; every application is built from scratch.
  • Good opportunity to implement any new ideas.
  • Engineering driven; you will be given ownership.
  • If you are owning a service, your decision matters during any feature discussion.
  • Any new ideas are welcomed; there is time for POCs and presentation, post which the same can be made into a feature/service.
  • HackWeek conducted every year gives an opportunity to present our ideas to the entire PhonePe. Top 10 ideas are chosen for presentation, and good ideas are developed as a product.
  • Yearly rating and performance review is directly based on your work. You are provided the opportunity to display your work and input them into a self-review portal. Your Git commits and bug-free feature releases matter; no politics involved.
  • What you do is reflected in your review. For job titles, a flattened hierarchy is used; everyone's a Software Engineer, with no titles for senior, junior, SD1, SD2, etc.
Cons

You can't expect a 9 to 5 job here. You will have good work and high responsibility, since most of the services built here handle high scale and mostly impact user payment transactions. Keeping it highly robust comes with extra effort and operational on-calls. Any small bug would have a serious impact, so being extra cautious is a must.

People tend to speak in Hindi in all the meetings. If you don't understand, you have to communicate that every time to them.

Advice to Management

Diversity in language is not respected most of the time. Many folks have questioned me why I haven't learned Hindi, our national language, and still tend to speak in Hindi in almost all the meetings I attend. I have to keep asking them to speak in English every time, which is slightly irritating most of the time. Even if I request them to speak in English, they eventually forget that and continue speaking in Hindi. This is kind of getting me to think: should I move to an MNC where language diversity is respected?
