Software Engineer Interview Experience

Process

The initial coding round featured two DS&A style questions. Both were "real-world" type problems but still required a solid understanding of data structures (graphs and max heaps for mine).

The virtual onsite was two weeks later and consisted of:

  • One coding round
  • One systems design round
  • One behavioral round
  • A coffee chat where I was allowed to ask questions.

Overall, it was an extremely positive experience. All of the interviewers were friendly and down-to-earth.

The coding problem for the onsite interview was a real-world working example and fairly simple to implement with a HashMap. After getting the initial requirements, we iterated on some more advanced concepts described by the interviewer. The coding onsite interview lasted 90 minutes, allowing for many permutations of the initial prompt to be explored.

The systems design question was also fairly simple. A basic understanding of API gateways, load balancers, queues, and relational/non-relational databases should suffice.

I want to add a caveat to this review: I have not received an offer yet, but I feel I did very well and am waiting to hear back in a few days. Regardless of the final decision, I can't stress enough how friendly and helpful all of my interviewers were.
