Software Engineer Interview Experience - New York, New York

Process

In the first round technical (coding) interview, I was asked to create a calendar where events could be created and edited using React. I completed almost the entire prompt, including some bonus items, using TypeScript. This was despite my interviewer mentioning that most candidates don't even reach the bonus prompts.

I worked slowly and methodically, openly sharing my thought process and consulting with my interviewer as if we were pair programming. I debugged any issues that arose quickly.

At the end of the interview, I inquired about work/life balance at Ramp. The engineer was refreshingly honest, stating that it's not great and that most days involve around 50 hours of work per week. During crunch periods, this can increase to up to 60 hours.

My dismay must have been apparent, as I was rejected immediately after successfully completing the coding interview. This is the only aspect of the interview where I believe I may have lost points.

Oh well, I didn't want to work for that exploitative company anyway.
