I was interviewed for a Toronto-based remote software engineer position. The recruiter called me, and when we discussed salary, they stated that there are many unemployed people in the market. Since the talent pool is so large, they indicated they could find an engineer for less than what I had asked for.
If they had informed me that the maximum for this role was a specific salary, that would have been acceptable. However, the way the recruiter cited the current market to justify a low salary made me want to hang up.
