Pros
  • Low stress
  • Very rarely requires staying late or any crunch
  • Good culture
  • Very good pension and health benefits
  • WFH 2 days a week
Cons
  • Low salary.
  • Use of proprietary programming languages.
  • Difficult to get any opportunities to work on new or different technologies.
  • Siloed knowledge with poor documentation, often entirely dependent on a single senior engineer as a single point of failure for many projects or aspects of products.
  • Terrible version control.
  • Terrible operations and pipelines.
  • Heavy peer pressure to do on-call weekends (with guaranteed tasks, so not actually on-call, just working weekends).
  • Pointlessly forcing a return to office despite no teammates being based in the same country, and performing the job perfectly fine from home for over 3 years.
Advice to Management
  • Stop forcing return to office.
  • Pay more. You are consistently leaking quality employees as soon as they reach high value because they can easily get way more money elsewhere.
  • Allocate more time and resources for CPD.
  • Get rid of the proprietary stuff and build on modern platforms.
  • Get modern deployment processes and version control in place for ALL build teams.
