It appeared to me that recruits or interviewers on the phone screen didn't study my resume before scheduling the interview.
The problem discussed was not language agnostic or algorithmic. I was given a Python code snippet and was asked to find issues in it. I had never worked on Python and naturally failed to understand the code.
After about 10 minutes, the interviewer moved to an algorithmic problem, which I successfully implemented in a language I knew.
