Great company, if overly bureaucratic
Senior Frontend Developer • Former Employee
August 21, 2023
Pros: Your Shopify experience will depend heavily on where you land in the company, but I found it to be a highly supportive, caring environment with exceptional coworkers and very good pay, comparative to everywhere except the elite FAANG titans.
Work-life balance is stellar, outside occasional deadline crunches. The company cares about the right things and generally does right by its people (even during layoffs).
Cons: The only two main cons of Shopify are:
1. It may not pay as well as the elite tech giants (although it still pays very well, in my opinion).
2. There's a lot of bureaucracy.
Not as bad as some companies, but there's way too much sending things three levels up the chain and waiting to get the inevitable swoop-and-poop from the execs, and then having to rework everything right before the deadline.

Great learnings, confused management
Senior Frontend Developer • Former Employee
Burlington, Ontario, Canada
May 16, 2023
Pros: - Very smart people to learn from and be inspired by.
- Exposure to huge-scale systems.
- Not afraid to change and experiment with new technologies.
- Nice salaries (for Engineering, at least).
- Decent perks.
- No micromanagement, flexible work hours.
- D90 (work from anywhere in the world for up to 90 days).
- Unlimited vacation.
Cons: Senior Leadership (C-level and direct reports) seem to get bored of the status quo once or twice a year and completely change everything.
Often, you might change teams because of a re-org, and this may or may not impact your performance review progress.
Promotions were once frequent, but now seem hard to come by.

Pleasure Working, Growing Pains
Senior Frontend Developer • Former Employee
Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Pros: The culture is really shared among teams and people. It was a real pleasure to work there for a few years.
Cons: The company was growing, so it comes with its downsides. But if you are agile, you shouldn't be too worried about that. It also comes with a lot of opportunities.
