Software Engineering Manager Interview Experience - San Francisco, California
Process
Probably the best interview experience of my life!!!
I'm actually surprised to see all the negative feedback here. The recruiters were on top of their game and super responsive right from the get-go!
They were nice enough to accommodate the interview around my vacation schedule within a day's notice.
Everybody I met throughout the process - the recruiters, scheduler, and employees onsite - was super nice, friendly, and genuinely seemed like they enjoyed working at Slack. They do stress a lot on diversity, which I think is great!
I was happy I got an offer from them. Even after receiving the offer, I've had a really great experience with the recruiting and People Ops team in getting all my questions answered.

Slack Work Experiences
- 5.0Great place to workSoftware Engineer • Current EmployeeSeattle, WASeptember 21, 2024Pros: I have been working here for just under two years, and my team is very nice and helpful. There are so many talented individuals to learn from. Managers are on your side and help you to succeed.Cons: Recent budget constraints can make it a bit harder to get promoted.
- 3.0Highs and lowsSenior Software Engineer • Former EmployeeSan Francisco, CAJune 27, 2024Pros: The pay is solid. The company is large enough that it cares about DEI and acts on it. Quality of life varies between managers.Cons: It’s possible to be in a position where a manager can make your life difficult. I also found moving teams at Slack fairly difficult, and it felt as difficult as applying for a whole new job. It seems like the culture changed a bit after the layoffs. Quality of life highly depends on the team.
- 1.0Company cares more about DEI than actual qualitySenior Software Engineer • Former EmployeeSeptember 26, 2024Pros: If you don’t care, most employees and managers don’t care either. Since the merger, rest and vest is a way of life.Cons: If you are actually a qualified employee who values work ethic, steer clear. They promote DEI above everything else. If your colleague is part of that collect them all set, then their career is set even if their abilities are two levels below where their title says they should be. Females made up 25% of the engineering force, but 50% of promotions one year. If you were not DEI, they didn’t even consider you. Basically, if you are looking to work with the best and brightest people you ever will in your career… steer clear, and you will be sadly disappointed.
