Process

The interview process was fair.

  1. Phone Screening: This is a standard HR screening with typical questions.

  2. Screening Coding Interview: This is a coding assessment. The prompt can be wordy, so focus on quick comprehension and coding. Remember to use TDD if possible. While code readability is important, prioritize making significant progress. Communicate your thought process clearly; being silent can be detrimental.

  3. Onsite Interviews: This consists of five distinct interviews:

    • Manager Interview: A standard fit interview with the hiring manager, covering conflict resolution and past work experience.
    • Coding Interview: Similar to the screening coding interview. Read quickly, code efficiently, and maintain constant communication.
    • System Design: A classic system design scenario, straightforward in nature.
    • Bug Squash: This is an unusual interview. You'll be given a complex repository to identify and fix bugs. In this specific instance, the provided bug for the Java role was problematic, as the IDE flagged errors that the interviewer disputed. This led to significant time spent diagnosing non-existent issues, making it a weak and difficult-to-prepare-for gauge of engineering skills.
    • Integration: This interview is designed for you to excel. You'll be instructed to set up your environment before the interviews begin (this setup is for integration tests, not just bug fixing). Be prepared to send requests and parse JSON, as mentioned in the preparation document. You must be able to import any desired dependencies. The prompt for this interview is significantly more wordy than the coding interview. Read as fast as possible to grasp the numerous components. The interviewer's statement, "it's not how far you get, but how you get there," is often untrue; focus on completing as much as possible.

I believe I had some influence over my rejection, and I learned a lot from the process. However, I speculate that factors outside my control significantly impacted the decision.

One such factor was the bug repository that produced erroneous errors, which I had no control over. Additionally, during the coding interview, the interviewer provided a misleading answer to my question, which he later admitted. I coded to a different functionality, and he only corrected my logic at the end. Better communication on both our parts could have prevented this from negatively impacting my score. I was also unprepared to import a dependency into a different project, which led to wasted time during the integration interview setting up familiar dependencies. With limited time, I struggled to read a lengthy prompt and complete two parts in approximately 20 minutes. Had I had more time, I believe I could have finished all sections. While I acknowledge areas where I could have performed better, the issues beyond my control were major contributors to the declined offer. It's uncertain if acing the manageable parts would have overcome these significant external challenges.

Regardless, learning from my mistakes is valuable. While the experience was frustrating due to some blunders on Stripe's part, the overall positive interactions prevented me from labeling it entirely negative.

The people I interacted with were exceptionally kind, respectful, and never snobby. I would reapply and am pleased with how far I progressed. I am confident that with a second opportunity on certain sections, I would have received an offer. Good luck!
