Software Engineer Interview Experience

Process

I was referred for this position. The entire process took place online due to the pandemic.

  • Technical Phone The question was a typical coding question. However, what bugged me was that the interviewer was not responsive throughout the entire interview. It was like talking to a wall, despite me trying to communicate as much as I could. It also seemed like the interviewer was doing something else and not paying attention to what I said. The good thing was that he gave me a pass to the virtual onsite.

  • Virtual Onsite The whole onsite took 5 rounds: 1 coding interview, 1 integration task, 1 debug task, 1 managerial, and 1 system design. The same thing happened again when I met the interviewers. The only exceptions were the debug round, manager round, and system design, since they require discussion by the nature of those rounds. Others were not responsive and also apparently doing their own stuff. One of the interviewers was literally giggling as if he was watching something or chatting with someone. All of this made me feel very disrespected. Also, the manager kept asking me the same question in different formats over and over again, which seemed weird to me.

Another thing that confirmed the interviewers were not paying attention at all was when I asked them some questions about the company or daily routine after I finished the questions. They acted like they were completely caught off guard and didn't know what I was asking. Also, when I asked them about what they like about Stripe, they all went awkwardly silent for a while before they could come up with some disingenuous and forged reasons. And when I expressed my willingness to join Stripe, one of them actually smirked at me. The complete interview made me feel their employees aren't passionate about what they do and don't care about the company's growth.

What pissed me off the most was how slack and irresponsive the recruiter I worked with was. The person who referred me had to reach out to her multiple times to kick off the process. And she ghosted me after she promised to give me an update after my onsite. I had to email her several times to finally get her to reply, telling me they were still reviewing, which I knew was a false statement since she initially told me they were going to debrief a week ago. Then I had to send her an email again after she promised me a new date for the result. The person who referred me was kind enough to reach out to her asking for some updates. Then I received my rejection letter, which seemed like a template that every company uses.

The overall experience made me feel this company is disrespectful and irresponsible. And the interviews made me feel the whole company is in complete chaos and no one seems to care. I would avoid this company at all costs just to spend your time on some other companies that actually show respect to their candidates.
