Software Engineering Interview Experience - San Francisco, California

Process

I applied through the site and was contacted by HR to schedule a technical interview.

After I provided some dates that worked, she contacted me again a week and a half later, and the original date no longer worked.

I promptly responded, explaining that something had come up (I had a Facebook interview an hour later), and provided some more available dates.

Apparently, she never informed the engineer, because I received a phone call an hour before my other interview, and I was completely caught off guard.

I decided to proceed and completed the interview. It wasn't difficult, but it would have been easier if I had more time to prepare.

Overall, the process was very disorganized, and it did not seem like a place where I wanted to work.

Questions

Write a function that, given the list of currently allocated server numbers, returns the number of the next server to allocate. In addition, you should demonstrate your approach to testing that your function is correct. You may choose to use an existing testing library for your language if you choose, or you may write your own process if you prefer.

Write a name tracking class with two operations: allocate(host_type) and deallocate(hostname). The former should reserve and return the next available hostname, while the latter should release that hostname back into the pool.
