My interview experience with trivago:
Applied through their Talent Community Platform. Approximately two weeks later, I received an automatic email requesting me to complete a case study.
Spent four full days working on the case study.
Approximately two weeks later, trivago sent an automatic email requesting a video/remote interview via Skype, stating, "We would like to get to know you beyond your profile." This was far from the reality of the interview. The interview was with a developer and consisted only of five specific questions about programming languages and a live coding test. The case study was not mentioned during this 30-minute video interview.
It would be beneficial for them to clearly indicate in the invitation if it's a simple technical interview, rather than misleading candidates by suggesting it's to get to know them beyond their profile.
One week later, I received an email stating I had received very positive feedback from the video interview and was invited to a personal interview in Dusseldorf.
Upon arriving at the Dusseldorf offices, the receptionist impolitely informed me that the person scheduled to interview me was on vacation.
After waiting about fifteen minutes at the entrance, one of the other interviewers appeared. To my surprise, he told me that the two people originally scheduled to interview me were not in the office that day.
Due to the absences of the original interviewers, he and a very junior developer conducted the technical interview. The questions were not complicated, were very general, and included a live coding test. Once again, the case study was not mentioned during this interview, as if I had not completed it. I am unsure if it was even reviewed.
Weeks went by, and in a most disrespectful and unprofessional manner, they never informed me of the hiring process outcome, whether I was accepted or rejected. I didn't even receive an automatic email.
I sent an email to the recruiter after almost a month asking about the outcome, but my query was ignored, and I received no response.
Two months after the personal interview, I sent another email asking again. The next day, I received an automatic email stating they had chosen another candidate.
When were they planning to inform me of the outcome? If I hadn't inquired two months later, would they have simply remained silent?
Is this their standard procedure? Reading other interview reviews here on Glassdoor, it appears this behavior is not uncommon.
I never expected a company like trivago to treat candidates this way, especially considering the time and effort invested in completing the case study, being available for the remote interview, and traveling to Dusseldorf for the personal interview.
People deserve respect. A significant effort was made, and the minimum expected is a timely response.
Honestly, this was the worst recruitment process I have ever participated in.
Consider this experience if you decide to apply here.
