Great front-line teams. Some of the best engineers I have worked with, and a very collaborative environment in many organizations.
Leadership changes so frequently that no new initiatives can ever take hold. Usually, leadership does not take the time to understand the technology, just makes sweeping changes. As a result, innovation has been all but eliminated.
Outside of ATG, Uber has completely divested from all research and development. CV and ML have virtually no place at Uber anymore.
Upper management is very political. If you do not know someone, it is difficult for your project to succeed. Additionally, in my 5 years, 19 out of 20 senior roles at L6 and above were brought in and not promoted. They have made it virtually impossible to get promoted out of the senior band at Uber, preferring to only hire friends and coworkers from previous companies to fill those roles.
While you communicate in your all-hands that there is a belief in the team, the actions do not reflect that. Make a process that is attainable for reaching L6 without having previously worked with the reporting director or VP.
The perception, valid or not, is clear that it is more likely to fill L6 and above roles externally than internally.
1. HR screening - the normal thing. 2.a. Peer review - management and leadership questions. 2.b. Technical system design. 3. Three more steps I didn't get to, constructed of more leadership and technical screening.
The whole process was a bit long, but the overall experience was good. Everyone seemed very prepared and managed to delve deeply into the situations I brought up for discussion. The recruitment team gave me quick responses after each stage.
HR contacted me and had an initial discussion on what I am currently doing and what the role expectations are at Uber. They also discussed the team that is looking for candidates. HR then scheduled the interview quite quickly, only a couple of weeks
