Process

The interview process began when a recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn with the job description and asked if I was interested in applying. I waited two months before responding, as I wasn't actively looking at that time. In January 2021, I engaged with the recruiter to see if the role was still open and to gain a better understanding of it. The recruiter called and explained the company history, initiatives, and the role in detail. I was intrigued by the work they were doing and immediately wanted to move forward with the next steps.

I had a phone interview within a week of the initial recruiter conversation, and it went very well. Then, I had five more interviews scheduled over the next few weeks. The first two were grouped together on one day, and the next three were spread over the following week. All except one were behavioral. The interviewers were very friendly and helped me along the way; it was more of a bidirectional conversation with many questions related to my experience, including examples of situations I encountered and how I handled them.

The technical design question involved designing a P2P mobile payment platform with backend components, failover, and security scenarios.

After receiving positive feedback from the six rounds of 45-minute interviews, I was told the feedback was strong and that they would like me to speak with the CTO and the site engineering leader. I was thrilled beyond words at this point, as I hoped this was moving in a positive direction and was getting very excited to be part of an opportunity to revolutionize healthcare.

My talk with the CTO went well. He asked me about my experience handling architecture/production issues and team constitution. At the end, I asked him questions about his vision for the company and what he expected from me if I were to join Verily.

The interview with the site engineering leader also went well. She asked similar questions about risk mitigation in projects and scope management. In the end, she even said, "Hope to talk to you soon."

At this point, I was almost sure that this was something I wanted to move forward with. I loved the company vision, the people, and their mission.

After waiting a few days, I received an email from the recruiter stating that my candidacy was not a go. Needless to say, I was truly disappointed and surprised at the same time with the outcome.
