Process

  1. Phone call with recruiter (technical questions on HTTP, SQL, OOP concepts, e.g., the difference between abstract and normal classes, SQL injection, and cookies).

  2. Second call with a Wayfair engineer (run through PHP code, assess understanding of PHP, regex, and some simple scalability questions).

  3. Onsite interview - two 1.5-hour interviews with groups of two engineers each.

    • First interview (with the Director of Engineering): These were nice and friendly people, though I sensed a bit of harmless bragging about the tough problems they were solving. Questions asked included converting words to numbers (e.g., "one million one hundred thousand two hundred ninety-eight" to the integer) and how TinyURL works.
    • Second interview (with two less experienced engineers): Questions covered SQL queries for orders and products, and writing an OOP class to solve a DVD rental library problem. Given objects like {x, width, id} (e.g., {0, 5, 3}, {5, 3, 8}, {7, 2, 2}, {9, 4, 4}), find the object that is continuous. In the sense that [0+5] gives the next object's x [5]. [5+3] is not equal to the next object's x, which is 7. So, the continuous segment comprises {0, 5, 3} and {5, 3, 8}. The next continuous segment is {7, 2, 2} and {9, 4, 4} as 7+2 gives 9. These objects are not sorted and are given randomly, unlike the above example. The problem is to find the continuous segment given an ID of an object.

The last question was asked in the final 15 minutes of the interview, which was not enough time for me to think through and answer. One of the younger interviewers appeared a little rude/judging. But overall, a good experience. Generally nice people.
