TVC Engineer • Current Employee
Pros: - Get to interact with really intelligent people, get to experience Google culture.
- One of the leading companies in the autonomous driving industry, exposure to state-of-the-art tech.
- Good managers.
- Pay is nice (depends on what you manage to negotiate).
- You get to have a big name on your resume (but via Contract Agency).
- Free food and snacks, sometimes there are dogs you can pet.
Cons: - Waymo is your employer in every way except for where the law is concerned. Technically, you do not work for Waymo, though you will only meaningfully communicate with your actual employer (temp agency) before your contract starts and near your contract ends.
- You will not work on nearly as interesting projects or hold significant responsibilities over your projects as your real employee counterparts; a lot of the time, you will be the grunt force that tackles tedium.
- You will have few opportunities for growth and advancement within the company.
- You will never be a part of the company in the same way as an FTE, and while there will be some FTEs who are sympathetic towards that and go out of their way to include you, it's baked into the employment structure.
- Possibilities for conversion are very low, so you shouldn't be taking the contract with the hopes of getting converted. Converting to FTE isn't really a huge 'perk' in this sense. What you might get as a TVC is recommendations from people you have worked with within Waymo, which can help when you apply for FTE positions from outside the company. Just apply for full-time positions if you want to be a real employee, maybe at places other than just Waymo. That being said, you may have better chances as a software engineer.
