Process

I was first contacted by a Workday recruiter who was a contractor for the company. The position was for an Enterprise Architect, a pre-sales role focused on the technology side rather than the functional side. I had one phone interview with the recruiter, followed by three on-site interviews with different Workday employees. The first interview was with the hiring manager. The second interview was with two sales managers and one sales director. The third interview was with the director of pre-sales.

Each interview took place at Workday HQ in Pleasanton, CA. All interviews, except one conducted during off-hours at the end of the day, started slightly late. The interviews focused on finding the right fit for the company, with a strong emphasis on culture and a "work-hard/play-hard" mentality. While each interview was conducted differently, all were professional.

I was impressed by the technology, the people, and the culture. It seemed that Workday hired sharp individuals who were passionate about technology and their company. The interview process allowed me to ask questions, rather than just being interviewed. I got the impression that the team was growing significantly, was pushing toward an IPO in the near future, and that they were interviewing quite a few candidates.

Sadly, I was disappointed by the unprofessional conclusion to the interviewing process. After not hearing any response or follow-up from the recruiter or hiring manager, I reached out to both for an update on the hiring process and, at the very least, for feedback on areas for improvement. I received no communication, even after following up. This is understandable after one interview, but unacceptable after interviewing three times, especially when this was apparently one of the final interviews before a decision was to be made on a candidate.
