One of my dreams is to start my own venture someday. How do I tailor my career accordingly?

Knowing that, how should I tailor my career path - What companies should I work for and what skills should I get to set myself up for success against this goal? Should I continue working at Salesforce or should I go work for a different company?

    • Salesforce is almost certainly not a great company to build the skills necessary for a successful startup. It’s too old and too big.
    • Fundamentals learned from Big Tech help, but you hit diminishing returns quickly.
    • The best way to prepare to found your own startup is to work at startups beforehand (the smaller the better).
    • Startups are almost never an engineering problem. Product manager is the role that’s most important for a startup’s success: You need great product direction to achieve product-market fit (PMF).
    • You can get a watered down version of startup experience while working a big company job by building side projects.

In addition to Alex's response, I think it could be worth learning a specific domain. For example, I have a large number of friends starting climatetech SaaS/fintech companies- there's a fair amount of domain expertise to learn in addition to everything Alex mentioned.

Salesforce, Inc. is an American cloud-based software company. It provides customer relationship management (CRM) software and applications focused on sales, customer service, marketing automation, analytics, and more.
